I don’t make films about history.
I make films about people.
For fifteen years I have told the stories of remarkable people from my city, Rockford, Illinois. Stories that could easily disappear if no one stopped to hold onto them.
But this story is different.
Because it is about a painter.
During the Holocaust in Białystok, nineteen Jewish painters were forced to work.
Paint… or die.
None of them survived the war.
But their paintings did.
One of those paintings surfaced in my city.
And suddenly a story that almost disappeared started breathing again.
I am also a painter.
So this story is more than history to me.
It is the voice of an artist who did not survive to tell it.
This film is an attempt to let that voice be heard again.
